Spartans Open Fall Season at Head of the Grand Regatta
MSU has dominant day on the Grand River.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The 2017 Michigan State rowing team officially kicked off its fall season Sunday at the Head of the Grand Regatta held on the Grand River in Lansing, Mich.
MSU raced in the Head of the Grand alongside six other participants, including the MSU men’s club team.
The Spartans took wins in all three races they competed in, winning the overall points trophy.
The weather was less than ideal for the rowers, with rainy and windy conditions throughout the day.
“The weather was certainly a challenge today with the rain and the wind up to 30 mpg gusts,” said head coach Matt Weise. “We’ve been kind of spoiled this fall weather-wise so dealing with some adversity was a good thing. I thought they did a really nice job in responding. In the eight, the wind was really a challenge and they took a bad stroke but then were able to correct it with a good stroke. I was really proud of the way we handled the adversity today.”
The Spartans dominated in the fours, taking the top four spots.
MSU also had a very strong showing in singles with all eight Michigan State rowers placing in the top eight.
In its last race of the day, MSU finished first and second in the eights.
The Spartans will send their varsity eight to compete at the Head of the Charles in Boston next Sunday.
