Oct. 18, 1997 Spartans Finish 1-2 in Women's Open Eight Competition at Head of the EagleEAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State continued to succeed in its first season as a varsity sport, as the Spartans finished first and second in the women's open eight-person boat competition at the Head of the Eagle in Indianapolis, Ind. Both Michigan State boats crossed the line in under 14 minutes, 30 seconds, with Washington University the closest competitor in 14:51. Michigan State also rowed well in the women's open four competition, claiming second place behind Washington University. The fall racing season features courses of approximately three miles in length. MSU opened competition as a varsity sport last weekend at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Ill. Michigan Stateis next action is next Sunday, Oct. 26, in its inaugural home event, the MSU Invitational, which also features Grand Valley State University.
