2014 MSU Rowing Season Preview

Complete Racing Schedule

"We had a nice start last weekend at Alabama in a series of scrimmages," said head coach Matt Weise. "We're a bit of a late add into this weekend's competition, but its going to give us a good official start to the season. This winter has been a training challenge for almost every team in the country, so having these opportunities to get out on the water and measure ourselves against outside competition are probably more important this year than in previous years. I think we made some good progress last week when we trained in Georgia, and we're looking to take another step this week."

The field of crews features Virginia, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Minnesota, Tennessee, Duke, Alabama, Dayton, Kansas and West Virginia in addition to host Louisville. The event will feature three sessions of racing on Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Each set of races starts on eight-minute centers, in the following order: Varsity Eight, First Varsity Four, Novice Eight/Third Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Four, and Second Novice Eight/Fourth Varsity Eight. The Spartans face off with Duke and Kansas in the first set of races, which begin at 9:15 on Saturday morning. In the afternoon, MSU is in the third grouping, lining up with Tennessee, with the varsity boat going off at 4:45. On Sunday, MSU will once again be in the first grouping, along with Virginia and host Louisville.

MSU's opening-day lineup features seven athletes (six rowers and coxswain Erin McGarry) in its top boat that rowed to a fourth-place finish in the varsity eight at the Big Ten championships a year ago.. Mc Garry is one of four seniors - Sarah Kovacs, Laura Moore and Monica LaPointe (who saw action in both the V8 and 2V8 last season). Olivia Jamrog and Nora Hannum are the two juniors, and are joined by sophomores Katie Cromie, Alyssa Jurcak, and Lori Comer. Jamrog rowed in the varsity four, which finished third at Big Tens last season.

MSU's second varsity eight features three seniors (Sara Sherman, Hayley Jenkins, and coxswain Rose Pawlowski), three juniors (Sarah Crosby, Kimi Lakanen, and Emily Sharp), two sophomores (Zion Keck and Joanna Beaton) along with freshman Brook Edgar.

Both of the fours lineups are young, with just one junior rower (Emma Green, in the 2V4). The first four is a pair of freshmen (Adrien Kawalek and Colleen McConnell) with sophomores Asabe Danpollo, Ursula O'Connor, and Julia Calzonetti (Cox). In the second four, juniors Katie Trahan and Chelsea Kneur are the coxswains, along with classmate Green and sophomores Jessica Marrone, Corinne DeVries, and Jane Katzer.
