MSU Set for Ivy-Big Ten Double Dual

March 23, 2018

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State will engage in its first dual racing of the 2018 season, traveling to Camden, N.J. to partake in the Ivy League-Big Ten Double Dual featuring crews from two of the nation’s top conferences on Saturday.

The teams will race on the Cooper River Rowing Course, a top venue for rowing regattas. Cooper River boasts a world-class, Olympic-distance 2000 meter narrow and sheltered straightaway and will host the 2018 US Rowing Club National Championships.

Michigan State will face Yale and Harvard/Radcliffe of the Ivy League. Big Ten foe Ohio State will also be racing in Camden this weekend, but will not line up against the Spartans.

“The tough competition to start the season was set up because we really want race at NCAA’s, and you’ve got to race fast crews and  to see how you do against them,” said head coach Matt Weise. “It was certainly intentional and I think it is a great test. The team is ready to race to that level, they’ve been doing a good job all year of upping their game as we go and I’m looking forward to seeing them compete.”

Spectator parking is available along Park Drive.  Please note that spots are limited.

Head coach Matt Weise and his squad continue with the tough spring schedule, racing against powerhouse programs in Radcliffe and Yale.

Yale finished the 2017 season ranked No. 7 while Harvard received votes in the final poll of 2017.

The Spartans will race against Radcliffe in the morning session beginning at 9 a.m. before taking on Yale in the afternoon starting at 1 p.m.

“Looking at the forecast, the weather shouldn’t be a problem and it shouldn’t be a problem for us going forward because we learned how to race in tough conditions. It’s a really fair race course, it’s usually really calm so it’s usually a really fair race there,” added Weise.

Racing beings with the varsity eights followed by the second varsity eights and the varsity fours. The third varsity eights will race beginning at 10:30 a.m. The afternoon session will follow the same racing format and will conclude at 2:40 p.m.
