East Lansing, Mich. - Michgian State's varsity four has been named the Big Ten Boat of the Week, as selected by the Big Ten Conference office on Tuesday, April 24.
Last weekend, the V4 - coxswain Rose Palowski, Abbie Christiansen, Alicia Milne, Heather Holliday and Lydia Hawthorne - had its best weekend of the season. Racing at the Stanford Women's Invitational, the four recorded an open-water victory of more than two lengths over the No. 11 host Cardinal with a time of 7:23.8. In the afternoon session, the Spartans pushed fifth-ranked Southern Cal to the limit, coming down the course neck-and-neck with USC. MSU checked in with a time of 7:28.6, trailing the No. 5 Women of Troy by just 1.2 seconds at the finish.
The Spartans have completed their regular-season dual races, and will now turn their attentions to the Big Ten Championships on Sunday, May 13 in Indianapolis, Ind. MSU's varsity eight is the four-time defending champions in that event, and won back-to-back Big Ten titles in 2009 and 2010 before finishing fourth as a team in 2011.
