East Lansing, Mich. -- - Michigan State heads to Madison, Wis. this weekend for the final regular-season dual races of 2013. The Spartans will line up on Lake Mendota on Sunday morning with the host Wisconsin Badgers as well as Minnesota.
Wisconsin is No. 14 in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) national top 20, while Minnesota is just outside the rankings, the top team receiving votes.
Racing begins at 8 am, with 15-minute centers. starting with the second varsity four and varsity four. After a short break at 8:30, racing resumes with the races for the novice eight (8:45) and second novice eight (9 am). The second varsity eights follow at 9:15, and the racing is capped with the varsity eights at 9:30.
The Spartans are looking for an increase in speed as they prepare for their final competition before the Big Ten Championships. Just the NCAA boats - the two varsity eights and the varsity four- competed last weekend at then-No. 4 Virginia with Duke. MSU's novices had great results in their last competition, at the Clemson Invitational - they won all three races on the weekend, despite the last set of results being wiped out due to the officials being unable to verify the race due to increasingly difficult conditions.
MSU has seen both teams they will race this weekend - the Golden Gophers were among the teams that raced at the Clemson Invitational two weeks ago, while Wisconsin raced at Virginia last weekend against Duke and the host Cavaliers - but the two Big Ten teams did not race one another, just the two ACC foes.
After this weekend's racing, the Spartans will have two weeks to prepare for the Big Ten Championships in Indianapolis on Sunday, May 19.
