EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State rowing team had two of its student-athletes named as 2011 All-Americans by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA). Senior Laura Cowal (Thorold, Ontario) was named as a First Team All-America and while senior Kellie LaPointe (Grosse Ile, Mich.) was a Second Team All-America selection.
Cowal is the eighth Spartan to attain First-Team All-America honors. Cowal and LaPointe, who both rowed in the Spartan varsity eight this season, were named members of the All-Central Region First Team by the CRCA. The Spartan varsity eight boat advanced to the Grand Finals at the NCAA regatta and rowed to a sixth-place finish with a time of 6:36.12. The decorated boat also captured an unprescedented fourth consecutive gold medal at the 2011 Big Ten Championships. It was the third consecutive medal for LaPointe in the V8 and the fourth for Cowal.
Along with being honored as the Big Ten Rower of the Year, Cowal was named to the All-Big Ten First Team. Cowal has rowed in the varsity eight in every one of her seasons as a Spartan. In 2008 she was named as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after competing with the V8 in every race of her debut season. Cowal was honored as a CRCA All-Central Region second team selection as a sophomore and then an All-Central Region first team selection as a junior.
LaPointe joined Cowal as a 2011 All-Big Ten First Team selection. She has been a member of the varsity eight for the past three years and started off as a freshman with the second varsity eight.
