Hessler honored at Lake Leelanau Boat Dedication Ceremony
Spartan Alumna Has Club Boat Dedicated In Her Honor
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A boat was dedicated earlier this month in honor of recent Michigan State Rowing graduate Monica Hessler ('17) at the Lake Leelanau Rowing Club at Fountain Point. The presentation was made by Erik Zehender, founder of the club. Monica was honored along with Chris Doherty, a former rower at Grand Valley State University.
Zehender characterized the recognition: "In honor of your leadership, character, and pioneering spirit as Traverse City area athletes who were among the very first to learn to row at Fountain Point way back in high school, and who went on to row successfully at very competitive college programs for all four years, my family and I believe that the two of you best embrace and best represent the core values and definition of success that we think can be an example for a next generation of rowers, and even to non-rowers to help make an entire community strong, intelligent, empathetic, and ultimately able to shape a brighter future for itself while overcoming the challenges that face all communities."
In attendance for Hessler's dedication were her extended family, friends, former teammates Brianna Higgins, Mikayla Russell and Courtney Boomer, Head Michigan State Rowing Coach Matt Weise and volunteer assistant coach Bob Crocco.
