MSU Prepares for Tilts with Ohio State, Penn State

LAST OF THE HOME COOKING: The Spartans hold their final homestand of the season this weekend, as Big Ten foes Ohio State (Oct. 24) and Penn State (Oct. 26) travel to East Lansing. MSU is 5-1 at home this season, and 2-1 when facing conference rivals.
ROAD SPLIT: The Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Northwestern on Oct. 19, in Evanston, Ill. Freshman Sofie Frankenhuis scored her first two collegiate goals, including the eventual game-winner with 6:49 remaining in the contest. After two early Wildcat scores, goalkeeper Beth George shutout the Northwestern offense to preserve the Spartan victory. Michigan State dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Iowa on Oct. 17 in Iowa City. MSU senior Ann Berberich picked up the lone Spartan goal, her seventh of the season.
MSU NOTES: MSU has reached the double-digit win mark for just the second time in 16 years. Last season the Spartans posted a 12-9 overall record, their first double-figure win campaign since 1981 (12-7-2)...Rayna Hiscox's goal in the Northwestern game gives her 43 career goals, tying Ann Marie Whalen (1980-83) for second place on MSU's all-time goal-scoring list...The Spartans are now 2-1 in overtime affairs...Junior netminder Beth George has played every minute in goal for the Spartans this season, racking up a .778 saves percentage...Junior Deirdre McLinden scored her first goal of the season and the second of her career in the Northwestern victory.
OHIO STATE FACTS: The Buckeyes check into the MSU game with a 7-6 mark, including a 3-3 mark in conference play. In its last contest on Oct. 19, OSU was shut out by Penn State, 3-0. The Buckeyes defeated Michigan State, 5-1, in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 12, the most points scored on the MSU defense this season. In the series, Ohio State holds a 25-7-3 edge, including wins in the last 11 decisions.
PENN STATE REPORT: The sixth-ranked Lady Lions ride a three-game winning streak into the weekend, as they lead the Big Ten with a 4-2 conference mark. Led by goalie Jamie Smith and forward Dawn Lammey, PSU won a tight 3-2 victory over the Spartans at University Park, Pa., on Oct. 10. Michigan State is 1-12 in its series with Penn State.
