Spartans Travel to Iowa for Big Ten Tournament

TOURNEY TIME: The Spartans head to Iowa City, Iowa, for the 1997 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, Nov. 7-9, at the University of Iowa. Michigan State finished the regular season tied for fifth in the conference (with Northwestern) with a 3-7 Big Ten mark. Currently riding a three-game losing streak, the MSU program has never won a Big Ten Tournament game, going 0-3 since the tourney's inception in 1994.
SPLIT STATE: Michigan avenged an early season overtime loss to the Spartans with a 4-0 victory on its home turf in Ann Arbor. Beth George made nine saves in net, but could not overcome 16 Wolverine shots. UM's Julie Flachs put the game out of reach with a hat trick, as the Wolverine defense held MSU to just six shots.
SPARTAN NEWS & NOTES: With her goal against Penn State on Oct. 26, Hiscox moved into second-place on MSU's career goal-scoring chart with 44...After starting the season 9-3, the Spartans have gone 1-6 in their last seven contests...MSU is assured of finishing .500 in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1986-87...Sofie Frankenhuis (10) and senior Sarah Wilson (11) are each within striking distance of MSU's single-season assist record of 14, set by Hiscox last season...MSU's 3-7 Big Ten record ties its best conference mark since the Big Ten came back together in 1992...MSU notched a 3-7 record last season...The opening round game of the Big Ten Tournament will mark Michele Madison's 100th game at the helm of the Spartans...She is 40-57-2 over her five seasons at MSU...The MSU program is two away from reaching the 200th victory since its foundation in 1972, currently standing with a record of 198-232-42.
