Field Hockey Opens Season Saturday

Michigan State opens the regular season with the Champions Invitational Tournament on Aug. 30-31. The 10th -ranked Spartans will open play against Delaware at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30. The consolation game will be played Sunday, Aug. 31 at 11 a.m., and the championship game will begin at 2 p.m. Michigan State will play either No. 12 Duke or No. 17 Louisville on Sunday.

Field Hockey Ties Michigan in Exhibition Game

The MSU field hockey team tied host Michigan 2-2 on Saturday afternoon in an exhibition game to open play for the 2008 season. Freshman Libby Liesveld opened the scoring for MSU. Senior Michelle Ciliberti added a goal in the third period to tie the game, and junior Elissa Unger was in goal for the Spartans.

The 2007 season brought the field hockey program back among the nation's elite. With just four seniors on the team, MSU compiled an overall record of 16-6 and returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004. The Green and White outscored their opponents 89-29, were second in the nation with a 4.0 scoring average, and ranked second in the nation in goals per game with 4.05 behind North Carolina, the 2007 NCAA Champions. On Thursday the Spartans began to prepare for the 2008 season with the opening of camp.

MSU Field Hockey Announces 2008 Schedule

Eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago dot the Michigan State 2008 field hockey schedule, as announced on Wednesday, June 18 by head coach Rolf Van de Kerkhof.

The Spartans, who were 16-6-0 (5-1 Big Ten) in 2007, will return 16 letterwinners to the 2008 squad which advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten tournament and earned its fifth NCAA Tournament bid in seven seasons. MSU ended the season seventh in the national rankings.

Deacon Selected First-Team Academic All-District

Five Michigan State student-athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA 2008 Academic All-Distric teams, as announced today by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America. Rower Kate Burdick (Ann Arbor, Mich.), field hockey player Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) and hockey player Jeff Lerg (Livonia, Mich.) are first-team members, while women's golfer Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) and hockey player Jeff Dunne (Grover, Mo.) are second-team members.

Molly Maloney Added To Michigan State Field Hockey Staff

The Michigan State field hockey program has added a new member to its staff. Molly Maloney, a former goalkeeper for the University of Michigan from 2000-04, will join the Spartans as an assistant coach for the 2008 season. Maloney's main focus will be with the goalkeepers.

The Michigan State field hockey team wrapped up Midwest Spring League play last weekend, competing in tournaments at Miami University and the Ohio State University. MSU won two of three in Miami, then split a pair at Ohio State. The Spartans finished Midwest Spring League play with a record 5-2, and had an overall mark of 13-2-1 in the spring, as they were named Midwest Spring League champions for the second-consecutive season.

The Michigan State field hockey team played its second tournament of the Midwest Spring League on Saturday, April 5 and Sunday, April 6 in Louisville, Ky. The Spartans went undefeated on the weekend, recording an 8-0-1 mark by outscoring their opponent by an 18-2 margin and recording seven shutouts in nine games.

The Michigan State field hockey team began Midwest Spring League play with two victories on Saturday afternoon at Ralph Young Field on the campus of Michigan State. The Spartans took out Central Michigan in the first matchup of the day, 6-0, then continued with a 3-1 victory of Big Ten rival Michigan. Jantine Steinmetz was the star for Michigan State on Saturday, scoring three goals and picking up two assists between both games.

The Michigan State field hockey team has been recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA) as a program with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. It is the second-straight year the Spartans has been recognized for this achievement, as last year they were ranked as one of the top five programs in the country. In addition, ten members of the team were honored for their individual achievements in the classroom, missing the 2006 school-best mark by one.

The Michigan State field hockey program has received signed National Letters of Intent from seven players to join the team in the 2008 season. The freshman cast will join an already stellar field hockey group, as they team up with juniors Jeamie Deacon and Floor Rijpma, who earned All-America honors in 2007, and the 2007 Big Ten Freshman of the Year Jantine Steinmetz. Michigan State field hockey assistant coach Helen Knull has been inducted into the 30th annual class of Kent State's Varsity "K" Athletic Hall of Fame. Knull joined eight former student-athletes, one administrator and two special honorees as the formally honored in a banquet held last Friday, Feb. 8 on the campus of Kent State.
