No.16 Michigan State dropped its season opener at home on Friday afternoon in heartbreaking fashion, losing to fourth ranked and national runner-up Duke in overtime. Trailing 1-0 with the clock ticking down in regulation, Abby Barker created space from the left side of the circle and found the back of the net to tie the game up with eight seconds remaining, forcing overtime.

The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has announced its 2014 Preseason Poll, and Michigan State ranks 16th in the nation to start the year. The Spartans look to build on the 2013 season that included a Big Ten Tournament Championship and run to the Elite 8.
Michigan State field hockey won both of its exhibition matches on Saturday afternoon, defeating Central Michigan (5-1)and Kent State (5-3). A balanced offense led the way in both matchups, as the Spartans got goals from five different players in each game.
