DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 15 Michigan State field hockey team dropped its game to No. 19 Duke, 4-2. Abby Barker and Heather Howie scored the Spartan goals. Redshirt junior Molly Cassidy recorded eight saves during the contest. Michigan State now holds a 5-5 record.
MSU had a strong start with two goals in the first 25 minutes of the match.
The Green and White began the game with a goal by Howie just under four minutes into the game. Howie scored from five yards out after a pass by Barker from the edge of the circle.
Duke tied up the score at 18:44 with a goal by Mary Nielsen that was deflected into the cage.
Barker netted her eighth goal of the season in the 23rd minute off a rebound of Mallory Tyler's saved shot.
In the second half the Blue Devils' scored three goals in seven minutes. In the 41st minute McKay Ross shot the ball from 10 yards out for a goal. Three minutes later, Duke's Nielsen scored her second goal of the game. At 27:25, they acquired a penalty shot, taken by Emmie Le Merchand finalizing the score at 4-2.
Duke topped MSU in both shots, 25-6, and corners, 12-2.
The Spartans will return to East Lansing for next weekend as they face Indiana on Friday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. and Pacific on Monday, Oct. 1 at noon.
