ATHENS, Ohio- Sophomore Allie Ahern's game-winning goal in overtime led the No. 20 Michigan State field hockey team over Ohio University, 1-0. Redshirt junior Molly Cassidy recorded two saves in her second shutout of the weekend, improving the Spartans' record to 8-6.
"It is fantastic to come home with two wins on the road, " said head coach Helen Knull. "We played two hard-fought games and came out on top. Our team discipline in executing the game plan was excellent."
Ahern scored her second game-winning goal of the weekend at 73:44, just three minutes into the first overtime. After a pass from sophomore Abby Barker, Ahern netted the ball with a hard shot from ten yards out.
While only tallying two shots in the first half, MSU was able to record five in the second half and two in overtime. The Spartans outshot the Bobcats, 9-5 overall.
Michigan State also recorded more corners in the second half, seven, than the first, one. The Green and White gave up five corners to Ohio.
This was the fourth shutout of the season for the Spartan and second of the weekend. MSU shut out Ohio State on Friday, 1-0. They were Cassidy's tenth and eleventh career shutouts.
Michigan State travels to rival Michigan on Friday, Oct. 12 and Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 14 as it continues its road contests. The game at Michigan on Friday will air on the Big Ten Network.
