No. 19 Field Hockey Defeats Kent State
Michigan State scored three goals in the first half.

KENT, Ohio- The No. 19 Michigan State field hockey team downed Kent State, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon. Jenni Smith, Heather Howie, Becky Stiles, and Abby Barker scored for MSU, while goaltender Molly Cassidy recorded three saves in the match. The win for the Spartans pushed their record to 9-7.
MSU scored three goals off of corners in the first half, and tallied one goal in the second half.
MSU opened the game by scoring three goals in 14 minutes. Smith put the first points on the scoreboard for Michigan State, after receiving a pass from Allie Ahern. Smith scored her first goal of the season at 7:25.
Smith assisted on Howie’s goal two minutes later. Howie, after receiving the corner insert from Smith, scored from the left side of the circle.
The Spartans still worked to gain a larger lead on the Golden Flashes as Stiles netted the ball in the 14th minute of the game. Graham and Smith assisted on the goal, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead.
Kent State scored its first goal at 19:41. Alyssa McFerren had the unassisted goal for Kent State, as the gap in score closed to two.
MSU pushed its lead back to three, in the 56th minute, as Barker scored the final Spartan goal off a pass from Stiles. Barker hit a hard shot from the left side of the circle for her 14th goal of the season.
Rebecca Lee scored the final goal of the game for Kent State at 68:06.
MSU outshot Kent State, 20-6. The Green and White also accumulated more corners, (10), than the Golden Flashes, (6).
The Spartans will continue to play on the road next weekend, as they face Northwestern on Friday, Oct. 19, and Central Michigan on Sunday, Oct. 21.
