Final Stats | PDF Box Score: Iowa 7, MSU 1

The Michigan State field hockey team fell in its final regular season home game, 7-1, to No. 25 Iowa in a Big Ten match at Ralph Young Field on Senior Day.

Before the game, the Spartans honored the six Spartan seniors who have battled for them this year in midfielder Lauren Bonness, midfielder Kendal Anderson, back Simone Vagnoni, forward Sophie Macadré, forward Grace Santi, and goalkeeper Katie Miller.

The Spartans are now 8-9 overall and hold a 2-5 mark in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes improve to 6-10 on the season with a 2-5 conference record.

The Hawkeyes outshot the Spartans 17-12. It was the Spartans, however, who earned the advantage on penalty corners, 7-6.

Miller and freshman Mairi Fletcher split time in the net for the Spartans, with Fletcher earning the start and Miller taking over in the second half.

The two goalkeepers combined for seven saves on the afternoon.

How it Happened:

Iowa took a quick 2-0 lead early in the first half, with both goals coming within 35 seconds of one another.

The Hawkeyes made it a 3-0 game in the 15th minute before the Spartans would find an answer.

In the 31st minute, Anderson found the back of the net after playing the loose ball off the penalty corner. The senior was able to get a handle on the ball and fire one in from five feet out, pulling her team within two goals.

MSU found themselves with multiple scoring opportunities totaling eight shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.

The second half was all Iowa, as the Hawkeyes scored four second-half goals, claiming the 7-1 victory over the Green and White.

Key Performances:

Anderson tallied the only goal of the afternoon for MSU, gathering her team-leading eighth goal on the year.

Fletcher had four saves in the first half.

Miller registered three saves in the second half for the Green and White.

Sophomore back Hannah Ackers led the team in shots on goal with three.

Up Next:

The Spartans travel to No. 8 Northwestern on Sunday, Oct. 22 for a Big Ten match to wrap up the regular season.
