MSU Falls in Regular Season Finale
No. 8 Northwestern takes an 8-2 victory over visiting Spartans.
The Michigan State field hockey team fell to No. 8 Northwestern Sunday afternoon by a final of 8-2 in Big Ten play at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Illinois.
The eight goals given up by the Spartans is the most this season.
MSU is now 8-10 overall and 2-6 in Big Ten play while the Wildcats improve to 13-5 and 6-2 in the conference.
The match marks the final regular season contest for both teams. Pairings and locations for the Big Ten tournament will be announced later tonight.
NU dominated the shot count, collecting 22 shots to just six from the Spartans.
The Wildcats had 11 penalty corners on the afternoon while MSU had two.
Senior Katie Miller and freshman Mairi Fletcher split time in net for the Green and White, each playing 35 minutes. The two combined for six saves on the afternoon.
How it Happened:
The Spartans struck early, scoring just 75 seconds into the game taking a 1-0 lead.
On the goal, redshirt senior midfielder Kendal Anderson dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and dished it off to sophomore forward Kelsey Keener on the right side of the circle. Keener played the ball into the circle before firing it across to the left side of the net to senior forward Grace Santi, who deflected it in from seven feet out.
Northwestern tied it up at 1-all five minutes later.
The Wildcats scored five more goals in the first half, taking a 6-1 lead into the break.
The Spartans struck first in the second half, when freshman forward Lia Sinisi found a slicing Anderson. Anderson played the ball and fired it into the back of the net from five feet out, giving MSU its second goal of the afternoon.
The Spartans allowed two more goals on the day, falling to the Wildcats 8-2.
Santi collected the first goal of the game and her third of the season.
Anderson totaled her ninth goal when she found the back of the net in the 39th minute.
Keener tallied an assist on the Santi goal, her second helper of the year.
Sinisi collected her first career assist on the Anderson goal.
Fletcher and Miller each totaled three saves on the afternoon.
The Spartans will compete in the Big Ten Tournament Oct. 27-29. The matchups and locations will be announced Sunday evening.
