No. 4 Penn State Edges Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Penn State's Tracey Larson scored her second goal of the game with just six minutes to go in regulation to snap a 2-2 tie, leading the No. 4 Lady Lions to a 3-2 field hockey victory over upset-minded Michigan State.

After PSU jumped out to a 1-0 lead, MSU's Rayna Hiscox countered with her team-leading 12th goal of the season, knotting the game at one apiece at intermission.

The Lady Lions took control out of the halftime gates, however, as Tracey Larson put one past MSU goalkeeper Beth George to stake PSU to a 2-1 lead. The Spartans' Jill Lusher responded with a goal off a penalty corner, retying the contest at two. Lusher, last week's Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, now has scored a goal in her last three games, pouring in eight during that span.

The contest remained deadlocked until Larson's game-winning goal late in the second half. Penn State's Jamie Smith denied the Spartan offense to preserve the victory.

The Spartans (9-4, 2-2) now travel to Ohio State for a noon affair on Sunday against the Buckeyes. Penn State (9-4, 2-2) continues their homestand against Michigan on Sunday.

SPARTAN NOTES: Rayna Hiscox now has 42 goals for her career, one behind Ann Marie Whalen for second on the Spartans' all-time list. Jill Lusher's goal tied her for fourth on that chart with 30 career marks. Prior to the contest, Lusher was ranked tenth in nation in points per game. With today's tally, she now has 20 points in seven games (2.87 ppg). Penn State's three goals tied the most points scored on the Spartan defense this season (3-0 loss to California to open the season, 8/29/97). Junior GK Beth George has played every minute in net for the Spartans this season, as she has maintained a .800 save percentage this season, including 11 saves this afternoon. Michigan State hosts Penn State on Oct. 26.
