Oct. 17, 1997 Michigan State Loses Heartbreaker in OT, 2-1EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Iowa's Kerry Lessard scored her second goal of the game with 8:34 remaining in overtime to send the Hawkeyes to a 2-1 victory over Michigan State in Iowa City. Michigan State took control early, as senior Ann Berberich scored her seventh goal of the season with 8:41 remaining in the first half. The Michigan State defense held onto the 1-0 lead until late in the second half, as Lessard knotted the game with 7:37 remaining in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Spartan goalkeeper Beth George played solid in net, making nine saves, including two in OT. Senior forward Jill Lusher had her goal-scoring streak snapped at four games, despite taking ten shots.
The decision drops the Spartans to 9-6 on the season and 2-4 in Big Ten play. Iowa takes the lead in the quest for the conference title, as they are now 8-5, 4-2.
