Penn State Ices Michigan State Field Hockey

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State and Penn State field hockey teams faced two opponents on Sunday - the weather and each other. Battling through an ice storm, the Lady Lions knocked off MSU, 3-1, at Spartan Stadium.

PSU jumped on the board early, seizing a 2-0 lead early in the first half, as Sonje Volla notched each tally. Tracey Larson put Penn State up 3-0 early in the second, but MSU's Rayna Hiscox responded less than two minutes later with her team-leading 14th goal of the season to close the gap to two. But the Spartans could get no closer, as the game developed into a midfield defensive struggle.

Hiscox's goal moved her into sole possession of second place on MSU's career goal-scoring chart with 44. Hiscox now has scored a point in each of her last three games.

The loss dampened the final home game for Michigan State's five seniors, as the Spartans drop to 10-8, 3-6 in the Big Ten. MSU's Jill Lusher, Rayna Hiscox, Sarah Wilson, Ann Berberich and Jenny Darga played their final game in Spartan Stadium, as Michigan State finishes up the regular season on Nov. 2, at Michigan. They will then head to the Big Ten Tournament, held Nov.7-9, in Iowa City, Iowa.

Penn State rises to 12-5, 5-3 in the Big Ten.
