April 2, 2007
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State field hockey team opened play in the Midwest Spring League defeating Michigan (1-0) and Miami (Ohio) (5-3) on Saturday. Floor Rijpma punched in the game-winner against the Wolverines, and Gwen Riley notched three goals to lead the team against Miami. Freshman Joelle van Ierland and Rijpma also contributed goals against the RedHawks.
Michigan State began the day against Michigan, winning 1-0. The Spartans controlled much of the game, and were led on the defensive side by freshman goalkeeper Elissa Unger. Unger stepped up her game with a strong performance, resulting in the win. On the offensive side, Rijmpa gave the team a boost dribbling into the circle and taking a shot from the top resulting in the lone goal of the game.
"It is awesome to see what we have been working on in practice being executed in games," said MSU assistant Helen Knull. "The whole team is elevating their game and contributing to the results."
The Spartans continued the day against Miami, picking up their second win, a 5-3 offensive battle. Miami took the lead, 2-0, in the first half before Rijpma got the Spartans on board on a penalty stroke going into halftime. Down 2-1, MSU regrouped at the half and outscored the RedHawks 4-1 in the second period for the 5-3 final. Riley contributed three second-half goals in the win, while Van Ierland put in the final goal, picking up a rebound on a penalty corner.
Michigan State will have two weeks of preparation before facing five opponents in two days. The Spartans will head to Kent, Ohio on April 14, where they will play Iowa (10:45 a.m.), Kent State (12 p.m.) and Central Michigan (2:30 p.m.). The following day, MSU will travel to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State (11:30 a.m.) and Northwestern (3:30 p.m.).
