East Lansing, Mich. - - Sophomores Becky Stiles (Medford, NJ) and Abby Barker (Columbus, Ohio) are both among the top field hockey athletes in the country who began competition on Thursday in the USA Field Hockey 2013 Women's National Championship.
The week-long selection tournament will crown one team Regional Champions, but far more importantly determine the 2013-14 U.S. Women's National Field Hockey Team. Barker and Stiles are candidates for the US Under-21 team.
All matches will be played at Powhatan Sports Complex on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. Admission is free and open to the public.
Stiles is playing for Team New Jersey, while classmate Barker is on the roster for the Mid West / California team.
"Abby and Becky are both returning to play at the Women's National Championship, an event where they have both had excellent experiences in the past," said head coach Helen Knull. "The opportunity for them to train and work with coaches from a number of other institutions is a great way for them to develop their game and relationships. With the Junior World Cup this summer, they both have an opportunity to be selected to the U-21 Championship the end of June."
Stiles and Team New Jersey are the reigning champions in this event, but fell to Pennsylvania on Thursday, 3-0 in the first match of the day. The Midwest/California team fell to the Under-21 team, 6-1.
