Field Hockey Opens 2017 Season with Exhibition Match Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State University field hockey team will open play for the 2017 season on Saturday with an exhibition match. The Spartans will face Michigan at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. ET.

“I’m really looking forward to having the opportunity to play someone other than ourselves and to test where we are in our development”, said head coach Helen Knull. “It will be a great challenge before we head to California to open on the 25th.”

Spartans Battle in Double Overtime Tournament Loss
The Michigan State field hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 double overtime defeat in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to No. 10 Michigan on Thursday morning. MSU held a 1-0 lead until the game’s final minutes before the Wolverines sent it to overtime and eventually went on to win. The Spartans wrap up the regular season with an 8-12 record.

The 2016 season saw the Spartans go 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the Big Ten. MSU faced a slew of tough opponents, facing nine ranked opponents in the 18-game schedule.

Both Kendal Anderson and Simone Vagnoni will return for MSU after having posted successful junior campaigns as they were named Second Team All-Big Ten and NFHCA All-West Second Team.

Anderson led the team with 14 goals to go along with eight assists on the 2016 season. Vagnoni tallied three goals and two assists for the green and white.

Also returning for the Spartans is junior back Bailey Higgins who started all 20 games last season as an integral part of the back line.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Miller who saw action in 17 games tallying 14 starts last season will also return to the Spartan lineup. Miller led MSU with 64 saves on the year for a save percentage of .660.



Knull is entering her seventh season at the helm of the Spartan field hockey program. She holds a record of 54-68 as head coach for Michigan State. Prior to being named head coach, Knull served as assistant and associate head coach for the Spartans for five years.

Michigan State will officially begin its season on Friday, Aug. 25 when it travels to Stockton, Calif. to face Pacific. The season opener for the Spartans is slated to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
