Abby Barker tallied her eleventh goal of the season.

Oct. 1, 2012

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 22 Michigan State field hockey team fell to Pacific, 3-2, on Monday, Oct. 1.  Allie Ahern and Abby Barker scored for the Green and White, while goalkeeper Molly Cassidy tallied five saves for the Spartans.

“Pacific played an aggressive game,” said head coach Helen Knull.  “It doesn’t matter if you out-corner and out-shoot an opponent you have to score goals.  This week we need to find a way to rebound better as a team and play better field hockey bottom line.”

Field Hockey Topples Pacific
In their second game of a west-coast road trip, the Michigan State field hockey team shut out Pacific, 10-0 in a neutral-site match. The Spartans continue their undefeated streak to start the season, and improve to 4-0. Eight different players scored for the Spartans, including sophomore midfielder Kristen Henn and sophomore forward Jessica Lindner, who knocked in two tallies each.

Ahern scored the first goal of the match, her second this season, in the 20th minute.  Christie Jones passed the ball to Ahern through the Tiger defense for a hard shot to the center of the net from 10 yards out.

Pacific scored three goals in a five-minute span to take a 3-1 lead.  Melissa Maultsby started the flurry at 27:50, dribbling through the circle and netting the ball from eight yards out.  Maultsby then assisted on the second Tiger goal at 30:23, scored by Paige Counsman. In the 32nd minute, Counsman scored again unassisted.

The Spartans’ final goal was scored by Barker with seven minutes left in the game.  Barker tipped the ball in off a rebound from Jessica Lindner’s saved shot.

Despite Michigan State topping Pacific in shots 21-10 and gaining more corners 6-4, MSU fell to 6-6 in its overall record.

Michigan State hits the road to face Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 5, and Ohio on Sunday, Oct. 7.
