Ahern, Cassidy Honored as Big Ten Players of the Week
Oct. 18, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman forward Allie Ahern and redshirt sophomore goaltender Molly Cassidy were both recognized by the Big Ten as Players of the Week for the week of Oct. 18th. Ahern picked up her first award of her career as the Freshman of the Week, and Cassidy was tabbed the Defensive Player of the Week. The two were key components in leading MSU to its first conference win in a 2-1 shootout victory over Ohio State last weekend.
Ahern notched the lone regulation goal for the Spartans during their home match against Ohio State. The Buffalo, N.Y. native scored her fourth goal of the season at 42:50 off of a corner play. After receiving the ball off the insert from Katherine Jamieson, Ahern dribbled to the right side of the circle and fired a shot into the right corner of the cage. The game went to strokes after two scoreless overtime periods, and as the fourth shooter, Ahern was able to capitalize on her attempt to hand Michigan State a well-earned victory. Ahern is currently the second-leading scorer for the Spartans, with four goals and one assist for a total of nine points.
Cassidy picks up her second Defensive Player of the Week accolade this season after tying her career-high with 14 saves against Ohio State. Cassidy also came up with two huge saves in the shootout which secured the Spartans' win over the Buckeyes. The goaltender boasts a save percentage of .745 and a GAA of 2.93. This is Cassidy's fourth Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week award of her career and second this season. She was honored for the week of Sept. 13th when she shutout No. 7 Virginia and only allowed one goal in the Spartans' 2-1 victory over Miami of Ohio.
Next up for the Spartans is a home match against in-state rivals, No.
7 Michigan. The match will honor the two Spartan seniors, Angie Lucik
and Holly Sherman, and begins at 4 p.m. It will also be televised on
the Big Ten Network.
