EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Big Ten announced the bracket for the 2012 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 28. Michigan State is the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will face host No. 4 Iowa Hawkeyes at 12 p.m. on Thursday, (Nov. 1) in the tournament’s opening game.
The Spartans finished their regular-season schedule with a 10-9 overall record and the Spartans went 2-4 in Big Ten games. Michigan State fell to Iowa 1-0 in the regular-season matchup between the teams.
“The tournament signifies a new season,” said head coach Helen Knull. “As we played Iowa over a month ago to open Big Ten play, I think we have become a different team since then. The team is focused and ready to head to Iowa City. I expect every opponent to be a battle as everyone is fighting for the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Tournament from the Big Ten.”
On Thursday's other quarterfinal matches, No. 2 seed Northwestern will face No. 7 seed Indiana, and Michigan earned the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Ohio State. Penn State, as the No. 1 seed, will face the winner of the game between Michigan State and Iowa on Friday in the semifinals.
The tournament will run Nov. 1-Nov. 4 in Iowa City, Iowa. Full coverage of the tournament will be provided by Big Ten Network; the quarterfinals will be streamed live on the Big Ten Digital Network, while the semifinals and finals will be on both BTN and BTN2Go.
