CHICAGO, Ill.- - Three Michigan State field hockey players were named to the All- Big Ten teams, as announced Thursday morning by the Conference office. Freshman forward Abby Barker and junior midfielder Adelle Lever were named Second Team All-Big Ten for the first time in both of their careers. Redshirt senior back Angie Lucik was recognized as MSU's Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree.
Barker had a breakout freshman season, leading MSU in scoring with eight goals and one assist in the regular season. The forward also leads the Spartans with three game-winning goals. She was honored as the Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Week on Oct. 11th after scoring the lone tally in MSU's 1-0 win over Ball State and scoring two goals in the Spartans 4-2 loss to Indiana. She notched a five game goal-scoring streak from the match against New Hampshire to the loss to Indiana (10/2-10/9).
Lever has been the leader in MSU's midfield this season on both offense and defense. The junior leads the Spartans and is tied for second in the Big Ten with her four defensive saves. Lever has started in every game for MSU so far this season and has notched two goals.
Lucik was chosen as the Spartan to be honored with the 2011 Sportsmanship Award. The Sportsmanship Award is given to individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. The student-athlete must be in good academic standing and demonstrate good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Lucik has tallied two defensive saves, one goal, and two assists this season. The redshirt senior was named to the Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad and was an Academic All-Big Ten honoree for the past three years.
