EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State opened up Big Ten Tournament play with a 6-0 win over Indiana in the first round on Thursday afternoon. Abby Barker led the charge for the Spartans, tallying three goals and her second hat trick of the season against Indiana. Michigan State improves to 10-9 on the season and advances to take on seventh-seed Ohio State in the semifinals tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.

"Since the final whistle blew in Iowa, we have been telling the team that the Big Ten Tournament is a new season and how important it is to focus on the process and the outcome will happen," said head coach Helen Knull. "Today we did exactly that and played a fantastic game of hockey. We saw players contributing off the bench that raised the standard and help close out the game. I am really proud of the team today." Barker got the scoring started for the Spartans in the eight minute with her 12th goal of the season on an assist from Allie Ahern. Barker scored again in the 16th minute after beating the goalie and putting it home in the bottom right of the net on an assist from Katherine Jamieson.

Claire Johnson scored her first goal of the season and opened up MSU's lead to 3-0 before the half.

Less than two minutes into the second period, Barker put home her third of the game off a penalty corner. Jenni Smith tallied her team-leading ninth assist of the season on the play. Michigan State then added two more, with goals from Mallory Tyler and Adelle Lever.

Indiana recorded nine of their ten shots in the second half, but Michigan State held strong, recording their fifth team shutout of the season.

No. 2 seed Northwestern was upset by No. 7 seed Ohio State in the second game of the day, and the Spartans will now play The Buckeyes in the semifinals on Friday at 12:30 p.m. Michigan State defeated Ohio State 3-2 when the teams met earlier this season. Tomorrow's game will air on tape delay on the Big Ten Network at 11:30 p.m.
