EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey head coach Helen Knull has been announced as the 2013 4U Field Hockey / NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year.
"I feel very honored to have received this award from my peers," said Knull. "However, this is not just about me but about the entire coaching staff and team. The success of the team comes from every single person committing to the team goals and bringing their best effort every day."
Knull led the Spartans to a 14-10 overall record and NCAA Tournament appearance in her third season as head coach. The Spartans continued to get better as the season progressed, winning 11 of 15 games to close out the season. That stretch was highlighted by a Big Ten Tournament Championship and run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.
"This fall was a highlight in my coaching career," said Knull. "Everyday I loved coming to work with the student athletes and staff. We never stopped believing and our hard work paid off."
The 14-win season was the most in Knull's tenure as head coach, and her overall record as a coach on the MSU staff improved to 105-67.
Knull becomes the third coach in program history to earn the NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year. Rolf van de Kerkhof won it in 2009 with Knull as an assistant. Michele Madison also won the award in 2002.
