MSU Renames Women's Golf Tournament 'Fossum Invitational'
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State University's annual fall women's golf tournament has been renamed the "Mary Fossum Invitational" after the 25-year women's golf head coach who retired last spring. The announcement was made Saturday night at the tournament banquet.
"I'm shocked," said Fossum, who did not know in advance about the name change. "I'm surprised and I'm very happy. It's quite an honor."
"We wanted to honor Mary for all of her time and commitment to this university and this program," said Stacy Slobodnik, the Spartans' new head coach who played for Fossum at MSU and is coaching her first tournament this weekend. "Now this tournament will be named in her honor forever. It is an honor for me to be able to do this for Mary, just as it is an honor for me to be her successor."
The tournament, previously known as the Spartan Fall Invitational, is an annual fall tournament and is a part of the Rolex Collegiate Tour.
Coincidentally, the MSU men's golf team hosts the Bruce Fossum Invitational each spring, which was renamed in 1992. Bruce Fossum, Mary's husband, was a teacher and coach for the men's program for 30 years.
