LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: Fifth/16 teams at Lady Buckeye
THIS WEEK: Michigan State visits a Big Ten school for the third time in as many weeks this weekend, as Michigan hosts the Wolverine Invitational Saturday and Sunday. Competition will take place at the University of Michigan Golf Course.
ANOTHER TOP FIVE FINISH: Michigan State posted its second top-five finish in three tournaments last weekend, earning fifth place out of 13 teams at the Lady Buckeye in Columbus, Ohio. The host Ohio State Buckeyes captured first place. The Spartans improved consistently in each round and posted totals of 318-311-308=937.
BOUNCING BACK: Michigan State was 10th at the Lady Northern two weeks ago, but turned in a fifth-place finish last weekend. An example of MSUis improvement: after trailing Iowa by 22 stroke at the Lady Northern, the Spartans beat the Hawkeyes by 10 shots at Ohio State. PAVING THE WAY: Junior Meggan Schumakeris best three-round score entering the 1997-98 season was a 245. Just three weeks into this year, she has improved on that score each weekend, most recently firing a 76-76-77=229 to earn an 11th-place individual finish at the Lady Buckeye. Schumaker has led the Spartans in each of the last two tournaments and fired three 76s along the way. Her previous low 18 holes was a 78 last season. FRESHMAN STAR: Freshman Kasey Gant continued her strong play, also posting a pair of 76s on the weekend following a first-round 79. She ended up in 16th place.
