LAST WEEK'S RESULTS: Fourth/13 teams at Michigan Intercollegiate
THIS WEEK: Michigan State heads south, to Lexington, Ky., for the Lady Kat Invitational this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is held each fall at Spring Lake Country Club. That course, which measures 5,886 yards with a par of 72, has hosted the tournament in each of its 15 years. Last year, the Spartans finished fifth out of 18 teams at the Lady Kat, while host Kentucky captured the tournament championship.
YET ANOTHER TOP FIVE FINISH: For the third time in four fall tournaments, Michigan State finished in the top five last weekend at the Wolverine Invitational. Two golfers finished in the top six for Michigan State, as the Spartans finished in 318-320-331=969. The Spartansi three top-five team finishes this year matches their total for all of the 1996-97 season. SCHUMAKER MAKES THE GRADE: Meggan Schumaker continues to impress in her junior season, leading the Spartans for the third consecutive tournament. Schumaker matched her three-round total from the week before (and her career-low three-round score) at the Wolverine Invitational, firing a 77-75-77=229. Her Saturday afternoon 75 is the best round of Schumakeris career, and her tie for second place individually for the tournament is the best finish of her career.
FOLLOWING RIGHT BEHIND: Freshman Kasey Gant wasnit far off Schumakeris pace, firing a 75 in the opening round and following with 78-84 for a total of 237, good for a sixth-place tie. Gant leads the Spartans with a 76.8 stroke average.
