Fossum Earns Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Former Michigan State women's golf coach Mary Fossum, who retired last spring after 25 years as MSU's head coach, has been named the recipient of the Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award.

The award, given in recognition of outstanding service above and beyond the call of duty, will be presented to Fossum at the National Golf Coaches Association annual banquet in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 28. The timing works well for Fossum, who will be able to see former player Jennifer Kangas compete in her first LPGA event at the same time.

"(Iowa State coach) Julie Manning called to twll me this morning and I have to say I was stunned," said Fossum, who was nominated for the award by her former player and current Michigan State head coach Stacy Slobodnik. "It was a very pleasant, happy moment. There have been a lot of smiles around today."

Fossum was the Spartans' first head coach and held that position from 1973-97. Under Fossum's guidance, the Spartans won an unprecedented five straight Big Ten titles from 1974-78, won another title in 1982 and played in the 1982 and 1984 NCAA championships. She was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1988.
