PALOS VERDES, Calif. - In the first round of the spring season, the No. 24 Michigan State women's golf team shot a 20-over-par 304 on Sunday to open the Regional Challenge, which is being held at the Palos Verdes Country Club. The Spartans are currently in 14th place in the elite 16-team field that features 11 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25, including seven in the top 10.

Junior Trisha Witherby led the Spartans in the first round with a 1-over 72 (38-34) and is tied for 16th place. Witherby, who started at hole 10, posted a team-best five birdies on the day and was 1-under 34 over her final nine holes.

Seniors Liz Nagel (39-38) and Allyssa Ferrell (38-39) each carded a 6-over 77, while freshman Kelly Grassel rounded out the team scoring with a 7-over 78 (39-39).

Senior Christine Meier shot an 83 (43-40).

Playing as an individual, junior Lindsey McPherson carded an 84 (44-40).

Baylor currently leads the field after one round with a team score of 2-over 286. Defending national champion Annie Park of USC is atop the individual leaderboard after firing a 4-under 67.

Round two of the Regional Challenge is set for Monday; the Spartans will tee off from hole 10 at 11:30 a.m. EST, along with host Ohio State and Texas.
