GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 24 Michigan State women's golf team is tied for eighth place at the Bryan National Collegiate after shooting a 10-over 298 in the first round of the tournament on Friday. Juniors Allyssa Ferrell and Christine Meier paced the Spartans, as they each carded a 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 15th.
The elite 18-team field features nine teams in the Golfweek Top 25 and 15 in the Top 50. No. 17 Virginia leads the tournament after 18 holes after posting a 7-under 281.
Ferrell bogeyed four of her first seven holes and was at 3-over 39 on the front nine, but bounced back over her final nine holes. She tallied seven pars and two birdies for a 2-under 34 to close out with a 1-over 73.
Meier was consistent all afternoon, compiling 15 pars and one birdie against just two bogeys to finish at 1-over-par 73 (36-37).
Senior Caroline Powers is tied for 33rd at 3-over 75 (38-37). Powers recorded three birdies but also had four bogeys and one double-bogey to go along with her 10 pars.
The second round of the Bryan National Collegiate is set for Saturday; the Spartans will tee off at 8:20 a.m. on the first tee, along with Auburn and Duke.
