Final Match Play Brackets

ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 20 Michigan State women's golf team defeated Texas A&M, 3.5-1.5, on Sunday to win the "Black" match play bracket at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. The Spartans went 3-0 over the weekend in match play, topping Georgetown and No. 22 Iowa State Saturday.

This year's Murphey Classic featured a unique scoring format. Friday's first round was a traditional stroke play loop, and those results were utilized to comprise a pair of match play brackets for the weekend. The top-eight teams were seeded in the "Red" bracket, and the remaining schools moved to the "Black" bracket. Michigan State tied for ninth during the stroke play portion of the tournament on Friday with a 19-over-par 307. No. 1 USC won the "Red" bracket.

After beating the Hoyas, 3-0, and the 22nd-ranked Cyclones, 3-1, the Spartans continued their strong showing in match play with a 3.5-1.5 victory over the Aggies in Sunday's "Black" bracket championship match.

Liz Nagel, who went 3-0 in match play over the weekend, defeated Bianca Fabrizio, 3 and 1. Nagel beat Alice Choi of Georgetown (3 and 2) and Carmen Vidau of Iowa State (4 and 3) on Saturday.

Kelly Grassel won her second match of the tournament by topping Marijosse Navarro, 2-up; Grassel did not finish her match against Georgetown in the first round as the Spartans had already clinched the victory.

Allyssa Ferrell recorded an impressive 2 and 1 win over Katerina Ruzickova to claim her second victory on the weekend. Ruzickova entered the weekend with the 16th-best scoring average (72.09) in the nation. Ferrell did not complete her match against Sasikarn On-iam of Iowa State in yesterday's second round.

Christine Meier, who won both of her matches on Saturday, tied Chelsea Mocio in the championship round.

Trisha Witherby fell to Natalie Reeves, 3 and 1.

The Spartans return to action April 19-20 for the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.
