COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 24 Michigan State women's golf team finished in a tie for second place at the Lady Buckeye Invitational after shooting a final round 4-over-par 292 on Sunday. MSU carded a 36-over 900 (305-303-292) for the tournament, which was held at the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club.
Freshman Kelly Grassel led the way for the Spartans, placing runner-up with a 3-over 219 (78-71-70), just one shot back of medalist Jennifer Ha of Kent State. For the second straight round, Grassel shot under par, as she tied her career low with a 2-under 70 on Sunday. The Chesterton, Ind., product tallied four birdies on Sunday, including three on the front nine, and collected 12 for the tournament.
Red-shirt freshman Gabby Yurik tied for 10th place with a 12-over 228 (76-76-76), marking her first career top-10 finish.
Three other Spartans posted top-20 finishes. Allyssa Ferrell tied for 15th after shooting a 230 (76-78-76), while Liz Nagel tied for 18th with a 231 (75-81-75). Christine Meier carded the second-best round of the day for MSU with a 1-under 71 with four birdies and tied for 20th at 232 (79-82-71).
Junior Lindsey McPherson tied for 27th with a 234 (80-78-76).
Ohio State claimed the team title by eight shots with a 28-over-par 892 (303-298-291). Kent State tied with MSU for second place at 36-over 900 (297-300-303).
Michigan State returns to action for the 2014 Big Ten Championships April 25-27 (Friday-Sunday) in French Link, Ind.
