FRENCH LICK, Ind. - The No. 25 Michigan State women's golf team improved its team score by six shots in the second round of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday and moved from fifth to third place in the team standings.

The Spartans carded a 9-over-par 297 on Saturday after shooting a 303 in Friday's first round; with a 36-hole total of 600 (+24), MSU trails leader Northwestern (287-295--582) by 18 shots heading into Sunday's final round. Michigan State is attempting to win its third straight Big Ten title. No. 9 Purdue is in second place at 587 (293-294).

Junior Christine Meier tallied the best round of the day for the Spartans with an even par 72, jumping up nine spots on individual leaderboard into a tie for fourth place at 3-over 147 (75-72). She trails leader Paula Reto of Purdue (71-71--142) by five shots. Meier collected three birdies on her front nine and was 2-under while making the turn; she finished with a 2-over 38 on the back nine to close at 72.

Senior Caroline Powers also moved up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place. Powers registered a 1-over 73 and is 4-over through 36 holes at 148. Powers also had three birdies in her round.

Junior Allyssa Ferrell is the third Spartan in the top 10. She is tied for 10th at 5-over 149 after shooting a 75 on Saturday.

Sophomore Trisha Witherby rounded out the team scoring in the second round with a 4-over 77. Witherby is tied for 36th overall with a 157 (80-77).

Junior Liz Nagel improved her second round by three shots with a 78 on Saturday and is at 159 through 36 holes. Sophomore Jenny Sritragul shot an 81 in the second round and owns a total of 160.
