Women's Golf Tied for Second at NCAA Central Regional
May 7, 2009
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 23 Michigan State women's golf team shot a team score of 295 in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional on Thursday to sit in a tie for second place with Purdue. MSU needs to finish in the top eight at the 21-team regional to advance to the NCAA Championships. Junior Laura Kueny and freshman Shannon Warner paced the Spartans with a 1-over 73 and are tied for ninth. "We played very well today," said MSU women's golf head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "Our expectations are always high, and today I think we showed what we're capable of. The whole team is excited and playing with confidence, but we know it's the first day and we still have two more days to go." The tournament is being held at Ohio State's Scarlet Course, a course the Spartans played April 18-19 for the Lady Buckeye Invitational. No. 2 UCLA leads the field with a 7-under 284. The Spartans are currently eight shots ahead of seventh place Georgia State and UT-Chattanooga. Warner, who took ninth at the Big Ten Championships, continued her success on Thursday. She shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine with three birdies, and finished with a 39 on the back nine to close with a 73. Kueny was consistent all round, recording two birdies, 13 pars and three bogeys to also finish with a 73 (37-36). The two-time first-team All-Big Ten pick entered the tournament as MSU's scoring average leader at 74.24. Sophomore Aimee Neff, a second-team All-Big Ten selection, carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 13th. Neff shot a 40 on the front nine but finished strong, compiling three birdies to close the back nine with a 34. Freshman Lindsey Solberg entered the clubhouse with a score of 75 (+3). Solberg also performed better on the back nine, shooting a 36 and ending the round with a birdie and six straight pars.
Michelle Bowles continued the theme of playing well on the back nine, carding a 35 on the final nine holes compared to a 41 on the front. Bowles shot six pars and two birdies on the back nine. Round two of the NCAA Central Regional continues Friday morning in Columbus. Live scoring of the entire tournament is available at www.golfstat.com |
