FRANKLIN, Tenn. - Playing in the weekend's most elite college tournament, the No. 22 Michigan State women's golf team took ninth place at the Mason Rudolph Championship held at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The 15-team field featured eight teams in the Golfweek preseason top 20, including No. 3 UCLA, who won the tournament.
The Spartans finished at 32-over-par with an 896 (296-300-300), just one shot behind No. 2 Alabama.
Senior Liz Nagel led the Spartans in Sunday's third and final round with a 3-under 69, which vaulted her up the leaderboard 21 spots into a tie for fifth place at even-par 216 (73-74-69). It marks the second consecutive top-five finish for Nagel, as she won the Mary Fossum Invitational last weekend. The DeWitt, Mich., native tallied five pars on Sunday against just two bogeys to go along with her 11 pars.
Senior Allyssa Ferrell also posted her second top-15 finish of the season by tying for 13th place at 2-over 218. After posting back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 on Friday and Saturday, Ferrell shot a 4-over 76 on Sunday. Ferrell finished sixth at the Mary Fossum Invitational and has now placed in the top 20 11 times in her career.
Junior Lindsey McPherson carded the third-best round of the day for MSU with a 5-over 77. McPherson finished 71st overall with a 234 (78-79-77).
After withdrawing from her second round on Saturday, red-shirt freshman Gabby Yurik shot a 6-over 78 on Sunday. She compiled a 76 in her first round on Friday. Yurik was competing as an individual.
Michigan State continues its fall schedule with the Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 11-13 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
