Women’s Golf Takes Third at the Windy City Collegiate Championship
Sarah Burnham and Paz Marfa Sans tie for third place.
HIGHLAND PARK, Illinois - The Michigan State women’s golf team earned its third top-three finish of the fall on Tuesday by taking third place in the Windy City Collegiate Championship in Highland Park, Illinois. The Spartans finished 14-over-par 866 (283-287-296), four shots ahead of fourth-place Florida.
Arizona State won the tournament with a 1-over-par 853 (280-288-285), while Oklahoma State was the runner-up at 4-over-par 856 (282-278-296) at the 6,200-yard Northmoor Country Club.
Sarah Burnham and Paz Marfa Sans both tied for third place at 4-under-par 209 after shooting below or even par in all three rounds of the tournament. The duo finished just two strokes behind medalist Maddie McCrary of Oklahoma State.
Burnham ended the third round on Tuesday with a birdie to card an even-par 71. She shot a 1-under-par 70 and 3-under-par 68, respectively, in Monday’s opening rounds.
Marfa Sans’ also shot an even-par 71 in the final round on Tuesday, following her 3-under-par 68 in round one and 1-under-par 70 in round two.
“Both Sarah and Paz played great and that’s three tournaments in a row now where both have played very, very well,” said MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. “As a team, we put ourselves in a position to win. The conditions were tough today and there were a lot of bigger scores, so we’re happy to take third place.
“Overall, we feel good about what we’re doing and excited to just keep playing and improving.”
Yurika Tanida was 25-over-par 238 (76-77-85).
Michigan State will be back in action Oct. 13-15 at the Lady Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
