Spartans Tied for 15th Place at Tar Heel Invitational
Freshman Kelly Grassel leads the way on Friday with a 1-under 71.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Michigan State women's golf team shot a 12-over-par 300 in the first round of the Tar Heel Invitational Friday at North Carolina's Finley Golf Course to sit in 15th place on the team leaderboard. The elite 18-team field features 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25 and 16 in the top 50.
Freshman Kelly Grassel led the way for the Spartans in the first round with a 1-under 71 (37-34), marking the lowest round of her young career. Grassel recorded two birdies and three pars in her final five holes; she is currently tied for 10th place.
No. 18 Vanderbilt leads the field after shooting a 3-under 285 on Friday.
Round two of the Tar Heel Invitational is set for Saturday. The Spartans will tee off at 9:54 a.m. from hole 10 along with South Carolina and Alabama. Live scoring will be available at birdiefire.com.
