Burnham Leads Spartans in Opening Round of the Tar Heel Invitational
Burnham is tied for third place after an opening-round 3-under-par 69.
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - Sarah Burnham shot a 3-under-par 69 to lead the Michigan State women’s golf team in the opening round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Friday in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. As a team, the Spartans shot a 9-over-par 297 and sit in 11th place.
Duke, which is ranked sixth in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, leads the tournament at 5-under-par 283 at the 6,379-yard UNC Finley Golf Course.
Burnham started her day with a pair of bogeys, but birdied three of the next seven holes and was 1-under-par after the front nine. On the back, Burnham picked up two more birdies to end the day 3-under-par. She is tied for third place, three shots back of first.
Allyson Geer is tied for 41st place after shooting a 2-over-par 74.
Round two will resume for the Spartans on Saturday morning on the 10th hole beginning at 9:09 a.m.
