Oct. 25, 2009
WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Michigan State women's golf team finished 10th at the NCAA Fall Preview, which concluded Sunday at the Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall, host of the 2010 NCAA Championships in May. The 18-team tournament featured 15 teams in the top 25 of the Golfweek rankings, including the sixth-ranked Spartans. No. 13 Duke, who MSU beat at the Tar Heel Invitational two weeks ago, came away with the tournament title by shooting a three-round team score of 881. The Spartans finished at 904 (301-305-298).
Freshman Caroline Powers led the Spartans with a 9-over 225 (77-75-73) to finish in a tie for 30th. She had six birdies during her final round of 73 on Sunday.
Shannon Warner posted the team's best round for the second straight day. After shooting an 83 in Friday's first round, Warner bounced back to record a 73 on Saturday and a 71 on Sunday. She placed in a tie for 38th overall with a 227 (+11).
"They call it the NCAA Preview for a reason," said MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "It was good to be here competing against the best teams in the nation and also to see the course. We now know what to expect down here; it really was a great experience for our team. Shannon Warner played great today, and Caroline Powers had six birdies, which was impressive."
Laura Kueny tied for 47th after carding a three-round total of 228 (71-79-78), while Lindsey Solberg tied for 54th with a 231 (75-78-78). Aimee Neff shot her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 76 and closed out with a 233 (78-79-76) to tie for 63rd.
The NCAA Fall Preview concludes the fall portion of Michigan State's schedule. The Spartans close the fall season winning two of their four tournaments, including a school-record performance at the Tar Heel Invitational after shooting a three-round score of 860. MSU returns to action for the spring season Feb. 8-10 for the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif.
