The third-place finish marks Michigan State's fourth top five finish of the fall season (in five competitions). MSU finished with a 300-309-312=921, four strokes behind second-place Purdue and just nine shots off the pace set by host Kentucky. Gant's three-day total of 222 included a first-day 69, which broke the previous school record of 70 she shared with two other golfers. Three players tied for second with 224s. Gant had won the Mary Fossum Invitational in September, her first college tournament The Spartans received strong support from junior Meggan Schumaker (Columbia City, Ind.), who continues to impress each week. She improved on her previous career-best 229, firing a 228 to tie for seventh place. Junior Ellen Bishop (New Castle, Ind.) was the third Spartan in the top 20, as her 77-78-78=233 was good for a tie for 19th as well as a personal best for three rounds. Michigan State returns to action Oct. 24-25 in Bonita Bay, Fla., to wrap up the fall season. TOP 10 TEAM STANDINGS 1. Kentucky 303 298 311 912 2. Purdue 302 306 309 917 3.
