Sept. 28, 1997 Women's Golf Claims Fifth in Lady BuckeyeEAST LANSING, Mich. -- Paced by a pair of top-16 individual finishes, Michigan State women's golf claimed fifth place at this weekend's 13-team Lady Buckeye in Columbus, Ohio. The Spartans fired a three-round 318-311-308=937, only two shots out of fourth place and 43 strokes off the pace set by first-place Ohio State, the host school and defending Big Ten champion. Junior Meggan Schumaker (Columbia City, Ind.) led the Spartan attack, carding 76-76-77=229, good for an 11th-place finish. Following Schumaker closely with similar consistency was freshman Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who finished 16th with a 79-76-76=231.
