No. 22 Spartan Women's Golf Hosts Central District Invitational
Feb. 15, 2013
Live Scoring | Tournament History EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 22 Michigan State women's golf team will host the 13th annual Central District Invitational on Feb. 18-19 (Monday-Tuesday) at the par 72, 6,009-yard River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla. MSU hosted the inaugural Central District Invitational in October of 2000. Since 2002, the Spartans have hosted the tournament in February. The Spartans have claimed two team titles (2002, 2008) and two individual medalist honors (Stacy Snider, 2002; Sara Brown, 2008) at the CDI. This year's 12-team field features Augusta State, Chattanooga, Denver, Georgetown, No. 25 Iowa State, Kent State, No. 22 Michigan State, Minnesota, SMU, TCU, UCF and No. 14 Vanderbilt (rankings according to Golfweek). The teams will shoot 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. TCU won the 2012 Central District Invitational with a team score of 882 and will look to defend its title this year. The Spartans, ranked 22nd in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, are coming off a 15th-place finish at the Regional Challenge earlier this week at the Palos Verdes Country Club in California. The elite field featured nine top-25 teams, including six in the top 10. Senior Caroline Powers, ranked 14th by Golfweek, led the Spartans at the Regional Challenge by tying for 18th place with a 7-over 220 (74-74-72). It marked her 19th career top-10 finish. Powers currently leads the team with a 73.38 scoring average, which is on pace to break MSU's single-season record of 73.53, a record Powers set during the 2010-11 season.
Junior Allyssa Ferrell will start in the No. 2 position for MSU, followed by junior Liz Nagel, sophomore Trisha Witherby and junior Christine Meier. Sophomore Jenny Sritragul will participate as an individual. Meier has been the top Spartan at the Central District Invitational the past two seasons, including a sixth-place finish last year in which she shot a career-low 218. Meier tied for 10th as a freshman in 2011 with a three-round total of 219.
