EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's golf team is hosting the Central District Invitational Monday-Tuesday (Feb. 17-18) in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. For the first time in the tournament's 14-year history, the event will be held at the par 72, 6,325-yard Cypress Links Course at Lakewood Ranch. The tournament was previously held at the River Wilderness Country Club in Parrish, Fla.

This year's field features 14 teams from across the country, including No. 22 Central Florida, Chattanooga, Houston, Indiana, No. 37 Louisville, No. 24 Michigan State, Minnesota, No. 48 Notre Dame, Oakland, Rutgers, No. 45 SMU, Toledo, UNC-Greensboro and No. 15 Vanderbilt (rankings according to Golfweek). SMU is the defending champion after the Mustangs carded an 888 to win last season.

MSU hosted the inaugural Central District Invitational in October of 2000. Since 2002, the Spartans have hosted the tournament in February. The Spartans have won the CDI twice (2002, 2008).

Michigan State opened the spring season last week at the Regional Challenge in Palos Verdes, Calif. The Spartans finished 13th out of 16 teams in a field that featured 11 top-25 teams, including seven in the top 10.

Junior Trisha Witherby led the Spartans in California by shooting a career-low 220 (72-73-75) for the tournament, tying for 18th place; her previous low score was a 224 she posted at the 2012 Mary Fossum Invitational. Witherby collected a team-best 10 birdies in the tournament.

Senior Liz Nagel currently leads the team with a 73.53 scoring average, while fellow senior Allyssa Ferrell is in second with a 75.07 average.
