Allstate Sugar Bowl Begins Sunday For No. 13 Women’s Golf
The Spartans will be one of six teams ranked in the Golfstat top-20 competing in the tournament.
EAST LANSING - The 13th-ranked Michigan State women’s golf team will travel to New Orleans this weekend for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The three-round, 54-hole tournament will be played Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the English Turn Golf and Country Club. Each round is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET.
The 13th-ranked Spartans will be one of six teams ranked in the Golfstat top-20 competing in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate. In addition to MSU, the 17-team field includes: UCF, Clemson, No. 20 Denver, No. 18 Florida, No. 21 Houston, Kansas, LSU, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina State, No. 8 Oklahoma State, Oregon, South Alabama, No. 11 USC, SMU and Tulane.
The par-72 English Turn Golf and Country club will play at 6,239 yards (front: 3,072; back:3,167) for the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate.
Allstate Sugar Bowl History
The Spartans are making their third appearance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, having previously competed at the tournament in 2015 and 2016. The Spartans took eighth in 2016 and Sarah Burnham claimed a share of medalist honors with a then-career low 5-under-par 211.
The event is in its ninth year with the first tournament taking place in 2010.
The Last Time Out: Florida State Match-Up, Feb. 9-10
The Spartans stared their spring schedule with a runner-up finish at the Florida State Match-Up, played Feb. 9-10 in Tallahassee, Florida. The Spartans finished 11-under-par 853 (285-283-285), just five shots behind tournament champ No. 7 South Carolina.
A trio of Spartans placed in the top eight, led by senior Sarah Burnham as her 7-under-par 209 (68-74-67) matched her 54-hole career best and was good for third place. Her final-round 67 marked her second lowest score of the season.
Notes and Numbers
The Spartans combined for nine rounds at or under par last weekend (Geer, 3; Marfa Sans, 3;Burnham, 2; Sharp, 1) … Sarah Burnham, who was named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week on Feb. 14 for the sixth time in her career, leads MSU in birdies per round at 4.06, while Pas Marfa Sans is averaging 3.94 per 18 holes … MSU has placed in the top three of five of six tournaments in 2017-18 … Burnham leads MSU in scoring average at 70.12, followed by Marfa Sans at 70.94 an Allyson Geer at 71.71 … The Spartans’ 853 last weekend was second best only to the 847 they recorded, also in a runner-up finish, at the Minnesota Invitational to start the season, Sept. 11-12.
