No. 27 Michigan State Women's Golf Ready For Liz Murphey Invitational
March 23, 2006 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The No. 27 Michigan State women's golf team is traveling to Athens, Ga., for the Liz Murphey Invitational this weekend (March 24-26). The tournament is held at the par-72, 6,228-yard University of Georgia Golf Course. The Spartans will begin play Friday at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The event is a 54-hole competition with the golfers playing 18 holes each day. A total of 18 teams are competing in the Liz Murphey Invitational this year. Those teams include: Arkansas, Auburn, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida State, Furman, Georgia, Kent State, Michigan State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tulane, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, and Washington. Last season the Spartans shot a team total of 921 (315-308-298) to finish in eighth place. The Spartans will have five players competing in the event. Sophomore Sara Brown (Tucson, Ariz.), the No. 71 ranked golfer in the nation, is the top Spartan heading into the weekend. Her stroke average is a team best 74.56 and she tied for third at the Spartans' last event, the Lady Gator Invitational. Junior Rachel Meikle (Fort Wayne, Ind) was the top Spartan at the Liz Murphey last year with a three-round total of 226 (78-78-70) and tied for 14th place. Junior Heather Rose (Grand Blanc, Mich.) and senior Dayna Burleigh (Fort Wayne, Ind.) are also representing the Spartans in Athens. This is third time each of them has competed in the Liz Murphey Invitational. Rounding out the five-player lineup for the Spartans is freshman Holly Niederkohr (Marysville, Ohio), who is playing in her fourth event of the season.
